About the Department: The Department of Family and Community Medicine is one of the academic departments of the College of Medicine at Northern Border University. The department is committed to maintaining the highest professional standards in education, training, research, and community service, while advancing the specialty of Family Medicine. It seeks to foster a professional environment that supports the delivery of high quality healthcare and addresses community health needs.
The department is responsible for delivering and evaluating contemporary developments in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, nutrition, healthcare management, and health services. It also works closely with community health partners at both national and international levels.
 

Vision: Aligned with the College's vision, the department seeks excellence in research, education, and innovative clinical skills to advance high quality care and enable graduates to contribute effectively to preventive, therapeutic, and research based community services.

Mission: In alignment with the College’s mission, the department aims to provide outstanding university education in public health, community medicine, and family medicine, consistent with current scientific advancements. It emphasizes evidence based practice, international quality standards, and sustainability through structured quality assurance systems.
 

Objectives: General Objectives:

  • Develop and update curricula, teaching methods, and assessment strategies in public health, community medicine, and family medicine.
  • Expand student engagement in scientific research and publication.
  • Support the development of students’ critical thinking skills.
  • Contribute to creating an attractive academic environment for faculty members and their assistants, promoting continuous improvement.

Specific Objectives: College of Medicine: The department teaches three courses for medical students: 

  • Community Medicine in the fourth year. By the end of the course, students are expected to understand and apply fundamental concepts and procedures in community medicine and public health, including epidemiology, surveillance and investigation of health events, environmental health, healthcare management, study of health problems and priority setting, risk factors, disease prevention, and health promotion.
  • Medical Research in the sixth year. By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate essential research skills, scientific writing, and principles of academic publication.
  • Family Medicine in the sixth year. By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate fundamental skills in comprehensive and continuous healthcare for individuals and families.

College of Applied Medical Sciences: The department teaches Applied Biostatistics to third year students in the Medical Laboratory Sciences program and fourth year students in the Nutrition program. By the end of the course, students are expected to understand and apply core concepts of biostatistics, data description and summarization, probability theory, selected statistical distributions, and experimental design and data analysis in health and biomedical fields.
 

College of Nursing: The department teaches Epidemiology to third year nursing students. By the end of the course, students are expected to understand key principles and procedures of epidemiology, including surveillance and investigation of health events, with emphasis on health promotion.

The department contributes, in collaboration with other departments in the Colleges of Medicine, Applied Medical Sciences, and Nursing, to awarding the respective bachelor’s degrees.

  • The College of Medicine program spans six years distributed over twelve academic levels, including the preparatory year.
  • The College of Applied Medical Sciences program spans four years distributed over eight academic levels, including the preparatory year.
  • The College of Nursing program spans four years distributed over eight academic levels, including the preparatory year.
